Sam Evans
Sam Evans is a classical Indian tabla player and composer who brings the instrument into improvised music, writing so that tabla can sit inside wider ensemble textures.
He spent a decade in Calcutta immersed in Indian music before returning to work in Australian improvisation, where the tabla is treated as a composing and colouring voice rather than a guest colour alone.
He appears as tabla player and composer on Tony Gould on the Art of Creative Music (MD 3412), the CD and documentary built around Gould’s Melbourne performances and teaching.
