Lute-player William Bower has long held a substantial reputation in Australia as both performer and teacher. This recording was made to present original lute works, nearly all of them previously unrecorded at the time of the 1977 sessions.

His technique and interpretation rest on more than ten years of historical study. Each piece is heard on the type of lute for which it was written. Three instruments were used, authentic replicas made in Australia and England: an 11-course lute, a 10-course lute, and a 13-course Baroque lute.
