Two Easy PiecesPeter Sculthorpe 2 movements3:16
- 19 Sea Chant [original solo piano version] 1:47
- 20 Left Bank Waltz [original solo piano version] 1:29
The disc gathers Sculthorpe's piano writing from versatile miniature duets to the charming Rose Bay Quadrilles and the eclectic scraping sounds of Koto I and II. Also included are the 1954 Sonatina, Night Pieces, Callabonna, Mountains, Djilile, Nocturnal, Sea Chant, Left Bank Waltz and Landscape.
The programme spans more than three decades: from that early Sonatina, through Asian-inspired inside-piano works of the 1970s, to the later solos Mountains, Djilile and Nocturnal. Sculthorpe himself plays the original solo versions of two of the easy pieces.
Reviews
Team of Pianists provides a deep insight into Sculthorpe's work. All of the compositions give stimulus to the imagination, and the last three give incentive for compositional experiment. The performance by Max and Darryl Cooke highlights the melodious and rhythmic charm of these pieces... The excellent standard of performance penetrates varied facets of contemporary piano music.
Here we have what must be considered the definitive recording of Sculthorpe's piano music ... It belongs on the shelves of all those who have an interest in Australian music and what this country has done culturally.

More to explore

Peter Sculthorpe
A retrospective compilation of favourite chamber works by the late Peter Sculthorpe, drawn from Move’s own catalogue. Torres Strait song, Kakadu landscapes and intimate string writing are heard in performances by leading Australian musicians.

Worlds Apart
Worlds Apart gathers music for piano duet, two and three pianos from France and Australia. At its centre is the first Australian recording of Max Bruch’s Concerto for two pianos and orchestra.

20th Century Piano Trios
Highly acclaimed Trio Melbourne presents 20th Century Piano Trios, a collection of rarely heard and newly recorded works that includes first recordings of pieces by Australian composers Peter Sculthorpe and Julian Yu.

Teamwork
An eminently listenable collection of piano music for four and six hands. Romantic, brilliant and companionable by turns, it is an exciting, all-stops-out tour de force from the Team of Pianists.

Night Thoughts
During the long still nights of Melbourne’s Covid lockdowns, pianist Len Vorster listened widely and thought hard about what he heard. Those evening ruminations became this programme of fifteen nocturnes and night pieces, from Schumann’s circle to Copland.

Flute Perspectives, Vol. 1
Flautist Derek Jones and pianist Leigh Harrold present this anthology of contemporary Australian flute music, from Sculthorpe’s Torres Strait cycle to solo and duo works by leading local composers.
