Paulo Freire (1921–1997), the Brazilian educator then in exile, was a staff consultant with the Office of Education at the World Council of Churches in Geneva when these talks were recorded. Made during his 1974 visit to Australia, they were given in English.

His books Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Cultural Action for Freedom remain in print. These recordings offer a clear, often simpler presentation of the basic thinking in those books, with vivid personal stories and illustrations.

A profound humanity and concern for his fellow man run through Freire's conversations. Passing biographical references, spontaneous wit and gentle sarcasm all add to the interest of the set.

Subjects include education philosophy, church and education, and liberty. The talks were recorded during Paulo Freire's 1974 visit to Australia for the ACC Commission on Christian Education. Short programme notes supply clear discussion questions.

Paulo Freire (1921-1997), Brazilian educationalist, has left a significant mark on thinking about progressive practice. His 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed' is still one of the most quoted educational texts (especially in Latin America, Africa and Asia). Freire was able to draw upon, and weave together, a number of strands of thinking about educational practice and liberation. Freire certainly made a number of important theoretical innovations that have had a considerable impact on the development of educational practice - and on informal education and popular education in particular.
