Andrew Lloyd Webber

Andrew Lloyd Webber writes musical theatre that lodges in the ear and stays there: soaring ballads, rock-inflected biblical retellings, and scores that turn novels and poems into long-running stage worlds.

His songs leave the theatre and keep circulating: Memory, Don't Cry for Me Argentina, The Music of the Night, Any Dream Will Do. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat began as a short school cantata and grew into a buoyant, pastiche-rich retelling of the biblical story, full of rock and roll, calypso and country colour. The Phantom of the Opera wraps Gothic romance in sweeping melody. Pie Jesu from his Requiem sits in another register, pure and still. Across Cats, Evita, Sunset Boulevard and the rest, the writing favours big feeling carried on tunes built to last.
