Don Burrows

Don Burrows shapes Australian jazz on clarinet, saxophone and a family of flutes, moving from soulful baritone ballads to light, dancing lines that colour film scores, swing and contemporary ensemble work.

His woodwind lines sit at the heart of John Sangster’s jazz epic of Middle-earth, where a warm ballad can open into pure baritone soul and reflective writing leaves space for unforced, singing solos on flute and clarinet. On the Fluteman score he leads with concert and alto flutes, clarinet and fife among a tight circle of jazz players. He slips just as easily into AtmaSphere’s buoyant, rhythmically restless world as guest flautist. With George Golla and kindred players he built the long-running quartet sound many still hear as the centre of Australian jazz club life, and he carried that clear lyricism into chamber programmes for classical audiences.
