Georges Bizet wrote French Romantic opera that still lives through melody and theatrical colour. Carmen’s street energy and fatal passion, and the lyric duets of Les pêcheurs de perles, are the scores most often heard today.
His stage catalogue also takes in La jolie fille de Perth and the one-act Djamileh. Incidental music for L’Arlésienne soon found a second life in the concert hall, and keyboard works such as the piano duet Jeux d’enfants show the same clear, memorable invention outside the theatre. A gifted pianist who rarely played in public, he put his craft into arranging and into scores built for the stage rather than the salon.
