George Tibbits
George Tibbits (1933–2008) was an Australian composer and architect. Self-taught in music, he wrote some forty-five works—among them five string quartets—nearly all given professional performances.
Born in Boulder, Western Australia, and later based in Victoria, he stood somewhat apart from the main channels of art-music production. Early scores reflect interests in Indonesian music and American modernism; later works turn to parody, collage and Australian subjects, including the orchestral song cycle Golden Builders and 1976, a setting of a 1906 newspaper account of a Gippsland massacre.
In 1975 he won the Albert H. Maggs Composition Award for his Second String Quartet, a concentrated four-movement work recorded on Petra String Quartet plays Conyngham and Tibbits (MD 3037). Parallel to composition he taught urban studies and architectural history at the University of Melbourne, pioneered heritage conservation, and received an honorary doctorate in architecture shortly before his death.
