Giuseppe Torelli's music for trumpet and strings sits at the heart of the middle Baroque concerto. His sonatas and concertos give the natural trumpet bright, ceremonial lines over lively string writing.
An Italian violinist and composer of the middle Baroque, he helped shape the solo concerto and wrote extensively for strings and trumpet. The D major trumpet concerto and the G1 and G7 sonatas favour formal poise and high ceremonial brilliance, built for clean dialogue between solo line and ensemble. Organ transcriptions after his concertos keep that same drive in another register, music made for public splendour rather than private introspection.
