Jimmy Van Heusen wrote the melodies that still sit at the centre of the jazz and popular songbook: film and stage standards built for crooners, bands and late-night rooms, from Darn That Dream to Come Fly with Me.
An American composer of more than a thousand songs, he gave the mid-century screen and stage its most durable hooks. With Johnny Burke he scored Bing Crosby vehicles and took an Oscar for Swinging on a Star; with Sammy Cahn he wrote for Frank Sinatra the title songs and torch pieces that defined whole albums: All the Way, High Hopes, Call Me Irresponsible, Only the Lonely, Love and Marriage, Come Dance with Me. Broadway yielded fewer hits, yet Darn That Dream and Here's That Rainy Day left the theatre and never came back. The lines are long, the harmony open, the mood either airborne or quietly heartbroken. Jazz players keep returning to It Could Happen to You, Like Someone in Love and The Second Time Around because the tunes still leave room to breathe and to swing.
