Johan Helmich Roman

Johan Helmich Roman's chamber music sits at the heart of Swedish Baroque: flute and violin sonatas of clear line and Handelian poise, written for court and for Stockholm's first public concerts.

His writing carries the imprint of the London scene he knew as a young man, where Handel's music left a lasting mark. Suites, sonatas and sacred pieces favour fluent continuo, unforced melody and short movements that sit easily on flute, violin and gamba. The Drottningholm Music gathers two dozen wedding pieces of courtly variety; the published flute sonatas and the Sonata in G minor keep that same practical elegance. On period instruments the chamber works sound clean and lightly scored, a Swedish voice within the wider European Baroque.
