Johnny Burke
Johnny Burke wrote the words to some of the most durable standards in the Great American Songbook, including Like Someone in Love, It Could Happen to You and Misty, songs that still sit at the heart of jazz and popular singing.
His partnership with Jimmy Van Heusen yielded a run of hits for Bing Crosby's Paramount pictures: Pennies from Heaven, Moonlight Becomes You, Only Forever, Sunday, Monday, or Always, and the Academy Award-winning Swinging on a Star. Earlier work with Harold Spina produced band and novelty numbers such as Annie Doesn't Live Here Anymore; he later fitted lyrics to Erroll Garner's Misty. The lines favour plain speech and open feeling, which is why singers and jazz players keep them in the book.
