Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim wrote music and lyrics that pushed the American musical into darker, more ambivalent territory. His songs move with intricate craft: sharp rhymes, restless harmony, and melodies that catch at regret, wit and longing.

From the lyric-only breakthroughs of West Side Story and Gypsy he moved to full scores that treat marriage, revenge, fairy-tale bargains and the wreckage of showbiz with equal seriousness. Company circles a single man among couples; Sweeney Todd turns Victorian horror into black comedy and piercing beauty; A Little Night Music waltzes through midsummer desire. Into the Woods, Follies, Merrily We Roll Along and Assassins keep testing what a musical can hold. Songs such as Send in the Clowns, Being Alive, Not While I'm Around and Losing My Mind travel far beyond the stage, carrying that same mix of sophistication and emotional bite into recital rooms and jazz sets.
