Sting
Sting's songs move between rock, jazz, reggae and intimate ballad writing. Fragile and Fields of Gold have become standards beyond pop, taken up by classical and crossover players in fresh arrangements.
As songwriter for the Police and across his solo work he has folded classical and worldbeat colours into rock and reggae roots. Fragile turns up in Spanish as Fragilidad; Fields of Gold, drawn from wind moving over barley fields, lends itself to voice and chamber settings. The writing favours clear melodies and a spare emotional line that travels when other musicians claim it.
