June Nixon, organist and director of the choir, leads this programme recorded at St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne. It opens with the prologue from Elgar’s oratorio The Apostles, and continues with three early settings of O Salutaris Hostia, Ecce Sacerdos Magnus, and Ave Verum Corpus. Bairstow’s hymn-anthems and communion settings complete the disc, with solo contributions from Dugald McNaughton.

The musical tradition of St Paul’s must compare very favourably with anywhere in the Anglican world. As one who values services in the cathedral and the consistency of the standard of the music offered, this fine recording is a welcome addition.

Edward Bairstow (1874–1946) was an English organist and composer in the Anglican church music tradition. He served as Organist of York Minster from 1913 until his death.
