One of Australia's best known composers, especially the theme from the TV series "Rush", George Dreyfus was recently awarded a the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany at the Victorian Parliament House, for services to music.
When a group of musicians assembled for the opening of Australia's Centennial International Exhibition in Melbourne in 1888, they began a long tradition of fine orchestral performances in this city and formed the nucleus of the orchestra we know today.
On January 1, 2001, a new era for orchestral music began in Queensland with the formation of The Queensland Orchestra (based on the Queensland Symphony and Theatre Orchestras). As the largest professional symphony orchestra ever established in the state, and the third largest in Australia, The Queensland Orchestra is founded on a dynamic new concept of orchestral music making.
