Domenico Zipoli
Domenico Zipoli (1688–1726) was an Italian Baroque composer and organist, remembered for his keyboard music and for the sacred works he wrote as a Jesuit missionary in South America.
His best-known publication is the 1716 collection Sonate d’intavolatura per organo e cimbalo, still widely used by organists and harpsichordists. Lighter liturgical pieces such as an Offertorio, a Toccata all’Elevazione and a Pastorale also appear in standard anthologies.
Trained in Florence, Naples, Bologna and Rome, he joined the Society of Jesus and worked in the reductions of Paraguay, directing music and teaching among the Guaraní people. He died in Córdoba, in what is now Argentina, before he could be ordained.
