In each case Gould sets the mood on piano, before Brown enters on soprano sax, alto flute or pan pipes. Gould provides a reminder that he is a most tasteful accompanist and a very lyrical, even rhapsodic, soloist. As for Brown, his playing is the best he has committed to record for some time. His sound is utterly personal, while his saxophone playing, especially, is full of feeling and drama. Brian Brown (1933–2013) was an Australian jazz saxophonist, flautist, composer and educator whose original music helped define a local improvising voice. From the 1950s he led his own ensembles and later founded improvisation studies at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Tony Gould

Pianist and composer Tony Gould is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. His career has spanned jazz and other improvisatory forms as well as traditional and contemporary classical, and for decades he has stood at the forefront of music education in Australia.
