The first “Horizontal” disc is a conventional edited piano recording. The second “Vertical” disc brings the music forward a hundred years by employing a multi-track approach to the mix.
Microphones were placed close to the piano, on stage and out in the hall. By switching and mixing these perspectives the music is creatively re-interpreted through a wide range of timbral and spatial effects.
The programme pairs landmark works by Berg, Schoenberg and Bartók: Berg’s one-movement Piano Sonata Op. 1, Schoenberg’s Three Piano Pieces Op. 11, and Bartók’s Fourteen Bagatelles Op. 6.
Artists
Stephen Emmerson
piano
Stephen Emmerson is an Australian pianist and teacher based in Brisbane, on the staff of the Queensland Conservatorium since 1987. His performing life centres on solo piano and fortepiano and, above all, chamber music.
Alban Berg
composer
Alban Berg joined late-Romantic lyricism to twelve-tone method in a small, intense body of work. Operas, chamber scores and songs carry expressionist feeling inside tightly organised forms, from the early Piano Sonata to the Four Pieces for clarinet and piano.
Arnold Schoenberg
composer
Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951) was an Austrian-American modernist composer who pioneered atonality and twelve-tone composition. His methods reshaped harmony and musical coherence in the twentieth century.
Béla Bartók
composer
Béla Bartók forged a modernist language from peasant song, asymmetrical dance rhythms and pungent harmony. His string quartets, piano bagatelles and graded teaching pieces still sound raw, lucid and fiercely alive.
