Covering every major and minor key, The Well-Tempered Clavier – forty-eight preludes and fugues – stands among the great monuments of keyboard music. It remains a cornerstone of teaching, and a sustained journey through Bach’s counterpoint, expressive range, and harmonic design.
Although conceived for harpsichord or clavichord, the cycle has long flourished on the modern piano. Lambden brings the rare authority of both pianist and harpsichordist. She studied with Ruggero Gerlin, an associate of Wanda Landowska, and worked with pedagogues including Nadia Boulanger and Gustav Leonhardt. Her readings favour structural clarity, tonal refinement, and deep stylistic understanding.
From the luminous simplicity of the opening C major Prelude to the architectural grandeur of the final B minor Fugue, she draws out the character of each key while shaping the whole as one artistic arc.
Her long association with Bach – including earlier recordings of the English Suites, French Suites and related works – makes this complete Well-Tempered Clavier a natural addition to her discography.
The set was recorded at Move Records Studio. Vaughan McAlley and Blake Stickland handled recording and editing; Martin Wright mastered; Vaughan McAlley wrote the liner notes.

More to explore

Bach's Tonal Soundscape
Ian Holtham’s distinctive approach to Bach’s monumental Well-Tempered Clavier lets listeners hear the preludes and fugues organised by key, rather than the traditional and more artificial order by book.

Six English Suites
Judith Lambden performs Johann Sebastian Bach’s six English Suites, BWV 806–811, complete on piano across two discs.

Six French Suites
Judith Lambden plays Bach’s six French Suites on piano across two discs, offered for the price of one. The set presents the complete dance cycles BWV 812–817 in a clear, balanced reading.

Life and Love
Cameron Roberts plays Johann Sebastian Bach at the piano, joining original keyboard works with his own arrangements and those of Busoni and Lipatti.

Bach to China with Yu
Volume 3 of Julian Yu’s clarinet music, with Robert Schubert and ensemble in arrangements that join Chinese folk melody to Western classical craft.

Crossing Paths
Ensemble Liaison and the Tony Gould Trio take turns across the programme: each piece is heard first in a scored reading, then in an improvised jazz response that opens the same melodic and harmonic material to fresh colour.
