Leonard Bernstein
Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990) was an American composer, conductor and pianist whose Broadway scores, concert works and tireless advocacy reshaped how wide audiences meet classical music.
His catalogue runs from the Broadway landmarks West Side Story, On the Town, Wonderful Town and Candide to concert works including three symphonies, Chichester Psalms, film music and the early clarinet sonata. As music director of the New York Philharmonic he reached mass audiences through televised Young People's Concerts, and he remained a passionate public champion of Mahler and of music as a shared language.
On Move he is present as composer: the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (MCD 615) already shows the melodic ease and rhythmic bite of his style, while vocal, piano-duo and jazz programmes take up theatre songs and standards drawn from the same world.
