Brett Kelly conducts the Academy of Melbourne in classical horn concertos and living Australian scores, shaping orchestral colour that lets the solo line sing and the new work speak with clarity and warmth.
As founder of the Academy of Melbourne he partnered Hector McDonald in concertos by Haydn, Christoph Förster, Telemann and Anton Teyber: poised classical frames, warm ensemble, the horn given room to bloom. Under his direction the same players take on Michael Easton’s Piccolo Concerto, its Nocturne a fine fusion of sentiment and power, and Julian Yu’s scores that ornament Western models with Chinese folk colour. He is also among the orchestral forces on Cezary Skubiszewski’s After the Deluge soundtrack, music that moves from melting violin lines to forties jazz, Irish airs and the pop of the on-screen band.
