Charles Hubert Hastings Parry

Hubert Parry's music still fills cathedrals and coronations. Best known for the choral song Jerusalem, the coronation anthem I was glad and the hymn tune Repton, his writing joins ceremonial splendour to a humane, singable warmth.

The larger choral scores, from Blest Pair of Sirens to the late Songs of Farewell, balance firm craft with deep feeling. His orchestral catalogue holds five symphonies and the Symphonic Variations, music of clear architecture and unexpected tenderness. On these recordings his voice is the one congregations know by heart: psalm chants, the bridal march from The Birds, and hymn tunes that carry the weight of worship without losing their song.
