Dieterich Buxtehude
Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637–1707) was a Danish-born organist and composer of the middle Baroque, long based at Lübeck. His organ works remain central to the standard repertoire.
The bulk of what survives is vocal music and organ music: chorale settings, large sectional praeludia in the North German manner, and ostinato pieces such as the Passacaglia in D minor and the Ciacona in E minor. Chamber sonatas and a smaller body of harpsichord music also remain.
The free and chorale organ works still anchor recital programmes. His harpsichord suites, canzonas, toccatas and variation arias — long unpublished and only recovered in the twentieth century — are gathered on Buxtehude at the Harpsichord (MD 3191). Sacred cantatas and motets for solo and ensemble voices with instruments appear on Buxtehude: Cantatas (TP157).
