Enrique Granados
Enrique Granados was born in Lérida in 1867. He studied the piano and composition in Barcelona and then in Paris, returning to Barcelona in 1889, and won distinction as a pianist and popularity in Spain with his zarzuelas and piano music.
His writing fuses Spanish dance, salon lyricism and the world of Goya. The twelve Danzas Españolas (MCD 453) remain among his best-loved works; pieces such as Andaluza, the Intermezzo from Goyescas, and Quejas, o la maja y el ruiseñor appear widely in recital programmes for piano, guitar, cello and other instruments.
After the 1916 New York premiere of his opera Goyescas he delayed his return and crossed the English Channel on the SS Sussex. When the ferry was torpedoed he drowned, refusing to leave his wife.
