Lorenz Hart

Lorenz Hart's lyrics for Rodgers and Hart still sit at the heart of the jazz and cabaret songbook: witty, conversational, and edged with a rueful tenderness that singers and players keep returning to.

Across more than two decades with Richard Rodgers he wrote the words for Broadway scores whose numbers slipped free of the stage and into standard repertoire. My Funny Valentine, Blue Moon, The Lady Is a Tramp, Manhattan, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, My Romance: a map of how American popular song learned to sound both smart and wounded. Hart favoured internal and polysyllabic rhyme not as a party trick but as wit in the service of feeling. The lines feel almost spoken, yet they land with a precision that rewards every fresh reading. Jazz musicians reach for them because the emotion sits just under the wordplay, ready to open in a ballad or swing with a grin. He wrote as a showman and a playwright: songs meant to be acted, intimate enough to live long outside the theatre.
