The opening set captures the Bernie McGann Quartet at the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, for the Qantas International Jazz Festival on 19 January 1981: three McGann originals with Chuck Yates on piano, Ray Martin on bass and Ted Vining on drums.
The later tracks pair McGann with the Ted Vining Trio at the RMIT Glasshouse Theatre, Melbourne, on 24 April 1983, in a programme of jazz standards with Bob Sedergreen and Barry Buckley.
The Sydney performance is previously unreleased; the Melbourne set first appeared on an Anteater cassette.

Two of the most prized possessions in my collection of albums, CDs and cassettes are recorded performances of the late great saxophonist Bernie McGann.
I was also most fortunate to be on stage for both of these outstanding events, one in Sydney for the Qantas International Jazz Festival, the other at the RMIT Glasshouse Theatre for Martin Jackson’s Melbourne Jazz Cooperative.
Over the years I have played my copies to numerous jazz musicians and enthusiasts – all with the same response: “this should be made available to listeners everywhere”.
Well now it is, with the blessing of all surviving participants – Chuck Yates, Ray Martin, Bob Sedergreen, Horst Liepolt, Colin Jones and Martin Jackson.
The Sydney performance has never before been released. The Melbourne performance was previously released on an Anteater cassette.

Born in 1937, alto saxophonist Bernie McGann grew up in Sydney and played drums as a teenager. He picked up the saxophone relatively late, at the age of 18. From early gigs with a jazz trio in a Sydney club in the 1950s, McGann gradually progressed to become a highly respected figure in the Australian jazz community.

Ray Martin is a jazz bassist heard on Australian recordings of improvised and live jazz, on acoustic bass and bass.
Ted Vining
drums
Ted Vining has recorded widely across Australian jazz, with Alan Lee, Don Burrows, Bob Gebert, Bernie McGann, Brian Brown, Musiikki Oy, The Big One, Blow … and The Ted Vining Trio. He brings a wealth of experience both on and off the jazz stage.

Dizzy Gillespie's compositions helped define bebop's harmonic and rhythmic language. Pieces such as Groovin' High and Con Alma remain core modern jazz repertoire, built for improvisers who want both swing and surprise.
Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday shaped jazz and popular singing with a voice that phrased like a horn, bending tempo and melody around the lyric. Her own songs, among them Don't Explain and God Bless the Child, sit beside the standards she made indelible.
