These shorter pieces were written expressly for the viola, exploring a range of styles useful to students and teachers.

The programme also includes a transcription of Beethoven’s Rondo in G major, Op. 51 No. 2, offered as a counterpart to his two Romances for violin.

In the artist’s words

I love the unique and hauntingly beautiful sound of the viola, and in writing these smaller works for the instrument it has been most rewarding for me to experiment with the various styles.

After my many years of teaching the instrument I am naturally aware of the viola’s limited solo repertoire. Apart from the Sinfonia Concertante by Mozart there are no solo works expressly for viola by Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven or Schubert. The two Brahms sonatas were originally for clarinet, and many of the romantic works for viola are actually transcriptions of music composed for other instruments.

I have composed these new pieces to help improve the situation. They are all written expressly for viola and I hope they appeal to students and teachers of viola alike.

We have included one transcription – the Rondo in G major, Opus 51 #2 for piano, by Beethoven. This beautiful piece provides the viola with a worthy equivalent to the two Romances for Violin of Beethoven.

Gabriel Anthony (Tony) Doheny

Australian born Tony Doheny has a long career in teaching and performing both in the USA and Australia. He has a doctorate in music from Stanford University in California. During his years in the United States he was Head of Strings at the Yehudi Menuhin Program in California. From 1975 to 1988 he was Senior Lecturer in Violin at the Queensland Conservatorium.

Fintan Murphy

Violinist Fintan Murphy is currently a Senior Lecturer and Co-ordinator of Strings at the Monash University School of Music-Conservatorium. He has worked with several youth orchestras including those of the National Music Camps, The Australian Youth Orchestra and is currently the Director of the Melbourne Strings Ensemble.
