Michelle Nelson is a composer and guitarist committed to instrumental works that are contemporary yet draw on traditional composition practice. Her popular works Brolga Dances, Capricorn Light and Pacifica (2009), and Amorevolezza (2005) reflect those aims.
She holds that in a world of cut-and-paste, computer-generated music the art of written composition is more vital than ever, and that the most original work still comes from the imagination of skilled artists.
The programme moves from the Italian-tinged guitar trio Harmony on Lyttleton Street and a classical sonata for flute and guitar, through the three-movement Birrarung Suite on the Yarra’s history and the six-movement The Bells of Beechworth, to the title work with mandolin orchestra and the solo Summer Rain with electro-acoustic soundscape.
