Soprano Jenna Roubos, tenor Lyndon Green, violinist George Vi and pianist Len Vorster give the cycle its voice. With the distinctive lilt of songs in the style of Mahler and his early twentieth-century colleagues, By the Winding River holds age-old themes of wonder, family life, nature, ennui and despair.
These poems by Tu Fu and other Chinese poets are about a thousand years old. They speak of love, friendship, children, the balance of work and life, escape from crowds, homesickness, and the return of Spring. Sung in English to texts adapted from translations by Kenneth Rexroth.
