These pieces were written for Clinch across nine years, mostly for overseas engagements, and this disc remains their published documentation.
Gross’s Quintet for E-flat alto saxophone and string quartet, Op. 102, sits beside Clinch and Geoffrey d’Ombrain’s Introspections for saxophone and prepared tape, Lovelock’s Finale from the Suite for saxophone quartet and Three Sketches for clarinet and piano, and Conyngham’s Journeys for solo performer and computer tape.
In the artist’s words
This recording contains work written for me over the past 9 years. Each work was composed for a specific occasion, all of them (except Journeys by Barry Conyngham) were written to be part of important overseas engagements. The music reflects a close collaboration with the composers in an attempt to produce more worthwhile Australian clarinet and saxophone music.
The only disappointing feature of these attempts is the lack of any facility in Australia to publish the music, such as an organisation like Donemus in Holland. Because of the many requests for copies of the music – particularly overseas – numerous unsuccessful attempts were made to find publishers both within and outside Australia. As the result, this recording is a means of keeping the music alive, and the only published documentation of a very worthwhile set of musical collaborations.

ensemble
Now defunct, the Petra String Quartet was formed in 1977 from graduates of the Tasmanian Conservatorium and focused on Australian compositions. They toured the eastern states, then Europe in 1980.

Nehama Patkin is an Australian pianist and teacher, associated with Melbourne and the University of Melbourne Conservatorium.
Barry Conyngham

Barry Conyngham, born in Sydney, has received numerous awards and fellowships for composition, among them Churchill, Harkness, Australia Council and Senior Fulbright grants. He holds an ARIA, two Sounds Australian Critics Awards and two Maggs Awards.
Geoffrey d'Ombrain

Geoffrey d'Ombrain now pursues his real musical passions: improvisation, composition and performimg. Flute playing is a central part of all this, as is the attraction of music derived from bird calls.
Eric Gross

Eric Gross (1926–2011) was an Austrian-born Australian composer, pianist and teacher. After settling in Sydney in 1958 he wrote concert, film and broadcast music marked by a cosmopolitan ear and a lasting fondness for jazz.
William Lovelock
composer
William Lovelock wrote accessible concertos, choral pieces and chamber music with a romantic bent, favouring entertainment over abstraction. His catalogue includes works shaped for Australian performers and instruments that rarely get a solo outing.
